Shift Lead

The Shift Lead is responsible for the quality of the coffee and maintaining our standard level of customer service at their coffee shop while on duty. The Shift Lead acts as an extended arm of our Coffee Shop Lead. The Shift Lead serves as a role model to their teams in their own examples of customer service, drink and food preparation, as well as takes greater responsibility for the overall state of the shop. This is a role that Baristas can move into and take on further responsibility in ensuring that the shift is running smoothly and that all Baristas and Cashiers on shift are being guided in accordance with the shift’s inner workings.

What We Expect From You:

Quality Control
• Ensure that the drinks, food and customer service in your coffee shop consistently meet Birch Coffee’s standards
• Coach and develop new and current team members to be making the highest quality drinks
• Regularly taste coffee drinks made by baristas at your shop to ensure consistently high quality that meets our standards

Lead by Example
• At all times to show your team how a highly skilled and welcoming barista approaches their work in serving guests and helping teammates
• Develop strong and successful working relationships with co-workers and promote a spirit of inclusivity and teamwork among all team members in your shop
• Ensuring that you are always following company protocol to stress how important punctuality, service, dress code, etc are to the daily operations of the shop
• Proficient with our SOPs and have the ability to train new hires to do their jobs 100% to perfection, 100% of the time
• Confidently open at the beginning of the day or locking up the store at the end of your shift and directing your crew on how to either set up for day or prepare the store to be closed

Be knowledgeable
• Know all coffee offerings (attributes, preparation) through cuppings and coordination with the Coffee Trainer, and Production teams
• Have a solid understanding of roasting dates, shelf life, and ideal usage dates for all coffee and oversee that all coffee is organized First In, First Out to mitigate waste
• Be knowledgeable on each food offering (ingredients/allergens) through coordination with your Coffee Shop Lead and details provided by purveyor’s informational and ingredient sheets.

Communicate
• Relay any important new information about products, specials, promos, etc. with the assistance of the Coffee Shop Lead and ensuring that all baristas and cashiers possess the same information
• Offer positive and/or constructive feedback to team members on the quality and consistency of drink preparation, cleanliness, professionalism, and customer service (Remember: Honesty without kindness is cruelty)

We Expect You To Have:

• 3+ months working with Birch Coffee and proficient with the job descriptions detailed as both a barista and a cashier
• Proficient with our SOPs and have the ability to do your job to 100% perfect, 100% of the time
• Strong technical barista skills in all areas of drink preparation (i.e., brewing, espresso, milk) and to receive an “excellent” rating on your coffee making ability by our certified coffee trainer
• Ability to fully “dial-in” your espresso grind settings
• Being able to handle a rush on bar efficiently, and knowing how to direct teammates to manage the flow and wait-time balance
• Food Handler’s Card issued by the NYC Department of Health.

Coffee Shop Lead

The Birch Coffee Shop Lead has a sincere and honest desire to share coffee and delightful experiences with anyone looking! They are responsible for developing all team members at their respective location and ensuring all guests experience exceptional customer service. They seek out how to make everyday a “day-making” experience. They aim to serve enjoy the highest quality product, all while leading the coffee shop to be successfully aligned with our operational goals.

Job TItle: Coffee Shop Lead
Location: New York, New York
Reports to: Director of Retail & Training

Essential Functions:
• Responsible for the overall experience of our guest and staff
• Ensure the crew is upbeat and positive while also following protocol
• Ensure every guest is receiving a meaningful and positive experience
• Maintain a clean, organized, and stocked store
• Serve as the voice and face of Birch Coffee
• Manage inventory and monetary transactions
• Educate customers on all our products when they inquire
• Maintain high quality and consistent product standards
• Cup and taste coffee frequently to maintain familiarity with product and quality standards
• Stay informed of new coffee availability and attributes
• Overseeing all ordering including coffee, milk, pastries, inventory, etc. ensuring that we
are always able to meet the requests of our guests while keeping waste to a minimum
• Other duties assigned

Supervisory Responsibilities:
• Cashiers, Baristas, Shift leads

Qualifications:
• Minimum of 2 years of retail experience working in specialty coffee
• Minimum of 1 year experience in a retail store leadership role
• Demonstrate passion and enthusiasm for coffee
• A love for working with others and maintaining an operationally sound and positive work
environment
• Customer service that is executed in a personal and professional manner
• Demonstrates a passion and enthusiasm for coffee and training others
• Self-motivated and have excellent organizational and time management skills
• Communicate professionally and effectively both verbally and in writing, including being
able to take thorough notes and record observations

Education and Training Manager

The Birch Education & Training Manager is primarily responsible for cultivating, ensuring and training Birch standards amongst all retail staff and continuing education courses. This person will conduct all new hire training at our headquarters in Long Island City, NY as well as on site in our Birch Coffee Shops.

Qualifications and Requirements:
• Minimum of 3 years of retail experience working in specialty coffee
• Minimum 2 years experience in a retail store leadership or training role.
• Customer service that is executed in a personal and professional manner.
• Demonstrates a passion and enthusiasm for coffee and training others
• Self-motivated and have excellent organizational and time management skills.
• Ability to juggle multiple projects at once.
• Communicate professionally and effectively both verbally and in writing, including being able to take thorough notes and record observations
• Be a welcoming presence as you will be onboarding new hires.
• Have a flexible schedule and be willing to work occasional evenings, weekends, holidays and Birch related events.
• Ability and willingness to travel to multiple Birch locations in a given day or week
• Be open-minded and have a positive attitude, especially regarding coffee education,
preparation techniques, and working with staff from many different backgrounds and with a diverse range of abilities.
• Open to criticism and constantly striving to improve.
• Continuously working to improve the Birch training curriculum and expand ways of
streamlining the education department.

Primary Responsibilities:
• Quality Control & workflow standards/accountability (in-store and in Lab)
• Assist Coffee Shop Leads in standard enforcement/accountability
• Barista review/check-in
• Training Birch retail staff
• Lead retail focused classes/demonstrations
• Work with Coffee Shop Leads to utilize training time/classes efficiently
• Administer retail employee barista testing and onboarding.
• Collaborate with entire executive team on coffee standards
• Assist with Lab classes
• Report weekly updates and goals to executive team.
• Work hand in hand with the Director of Retail & Training to constantly improve and
streamline the education curriculum.
• Lead public classes (cuppings, home brewing, introduction to espresso and intermediate
espresso)
